cost cutting...

cost cutting eventually leads to job cutting or 'lay-off's in industrial terms.

but how this can be reduced?
we cannot avoid such things in tough times as now of course.
but can we save money effectively? are there ways to do that?
thinking about a few things happening around me... i thought of listing some of the ways i feel people can save money.

some simple personal habits that can save money:
all may not be convincing for all of us.
many of you might be following this already.
i am just listing here so that we can share thoughts.

1. after washing ur hands... use your handkerchief instead of toilet paper or the electric drier. let them be there for any case.
2. have a mug. reuse it. avoid paper cups.
3. shutdown ur laptop after work. power down the docking stations
4. turn your laptop radio on only when u need WiFi or Bluetooth.
5. stand-by ur laptop when going for lunch. easy way - set power saving options in windows. u lock it and after 5mins it sleeps.
6. have a door mat in the entrance if there isn't one. make sure you wipe ur shoes in that when u enter the building.
walk carefully with your coffee mug to avoid spilling.
these are crazy. but it reduces the number of rinses for the cleaning mop.
7. never waste food.pick only the right amount of food you require.
if u're not sure, take less and refill again next time - needs co-operation from the caterer for some offices.
8. use public transport.
9. be very very mindful in what you commit for a product release.
the right thing in the release and one less low priority thing can reduce enormous r&d costs in development, maintenance, testing, quality, release etc in a particular quarter.
10. if u're running ur laptop on battery, just be sure that the power supply for ur docking station/power adapter is switched-off.
11. party less. use debit cards. avoid credit cards.
12. use hand made coffees. avoid softdrinks - cuts operating costs besides being healthy.
13. climb stairs. saves power bills.
14. if u find there's enough for a few more in the elevator car, and there some people coming... wait for them and take them in.
15. car pool.
16. carry a shoppers bag. tell the shop keeper that u don't want a bag as u have one. for little things, u don't need a bag anyway to carry them :)
17. use bucket and cloth to wash your car. you don't really need a water hose and a pump! if it is that dirty... leave it for a car wash.
18. avoid business travel unless required.
19. recruit mindfully. check your current priorities before recruiting. think about it for sometime before begining recruitment activity. what if one of the current project closes? what if a sudden heap of requirements flows in? what if you need to increase r&d activities? are skillsets reusuable? are we already getting redundant?
...
XX. follow any or more of these as much is suitable for you
YY. share ur cost saving thoughts with your friends
ZZ. encourage people in ur organization to save money
